Nob End Building, situated at
the top of Prestolee Locks, was once the centre of operations.
The building, which is the last surviving Manchester, Bolton
& Bury Canal building, housed a small office, a general office,
a joiner's shop and a smithy. From this site maintenance work
for the bulk of the waterway was carried out until a decline
in traffic forced closure in the 1950's. The workshop is still
owned by British Waterways who lease the building to The Manchester,
Bolton & Bury Canal Society. Plans to turn the Workshop into
a visitor's centre for £250,000 have as yet not materialised.
Sadly nothing has been done to maintain this important part of
our local heritage.
